What’s On At Carriageworks In 2016

Nov 25, 2015  ·  3 min read

By Ben Stephens…

52. The number of cards in a deck. The number of weeks in a year. The number of white keys on a piano. All 52-esque facts but not what I want to talk about. I want to talk about Carriageworks and the consistently killer stuff they do. Honestly, how many times have you been to an event at Carriageworks and left disappointed? I asked around the office and the answer I found was zero times. The creative minds running the show at the old Eveleigh rail yards – turned cutting edge gallery, are doing a mighty fine job. Now back to the figure that I dropped before, 52. Carriageworks has released their 2016 programme and it boasts a whopping 52 events. I understand that you might not have enough time to read over a breakdown for each and every event happening next year, so I chose a handful that stood out as clear winners.

FBi SMACS Festival:

The independent youth radio champions at FBi are curating a brand new festival, working with the Sydney Music Art and Culture (SMAC) Awards to bring a fresh line-up to Carriageworks in early January. In partnership with Sydney Festival the FBi SMACS will host the musical likes of Dustin Tebbutt, Black Vanilla and Ta-ku, while over in the artist area you will find David Carpa and Lewis Doherty, just to name a few.

This is How We Die by Christopher Brett Bailey:

As far as monologues go, this piece by the English thespian, has managed to nap four stars from The Guardian and The Scotsman in the UK. The story tells the tale of paranoia, young love and ultra-violence in a dark humouring way. Highlight this one.

Semi-Permanent 2016:

We weren’t sure to feature this or not as the dates for SP16 are the only thing set in stone… the official programme won’t be out until next year. Semi-Permanent, a festival that spreads creative juices and inspiration and from the sharpest minds in design, film and art plays host to exhibitions and workshops over a week long period. May 26-28, mark that down as ‘I have a semi-permanent engagement to attend’, that should jog your mind enough. With the likes of Ben Quilty and Noah Taylor in 2015, next year should be equal or just straight out next level.

Simple Infinity:

This installation is making us all a little excited. Created by Urban Theatre Projects Artistic Director, Rosie Dennis, Simple Infinity celebrates the individual within the big picture of the world. Drawing inspiration from the movie Hugo, the piece will take aim at the vulnerability and fragility of human connections. It will be a mixture of live performance and installation, with the odd reminder of our humanness. Seriously cool stuff.

Heard SYD:

As part of the Art & About festival in November, Nick Cave, along with a local choreographer will transform a part of the city into a dream state with 60 dancers dressed as post modern horses to create a thirst for wonder and indescribable vibes. This will be the most highly anticipated public event by far. Nick Cave you genius!
This clearly isn’t a complete list of the 52 events that are scheduled for next year at Carriageworks, but it is a starting point. Check out the full list HERE
