Instagramming In Sydney

Jan 15, 2016  ·  5 min read

By Ben Stephens.

Even if you’re not that big on Insty, when travelling to Sydney you’re probably going to want to throw a few snaps up on the ‘gram. We know what it’s like to arrive in a new city and not know the best places to snap a shot, do some fine post production in a myriad of editing apps, before spending a way too much time pairing the recent depiction of our travels with a witty one-liner caption. So, to give you a head start, we’ve chucked together a list of spots around the city that you need in your ‘gram game.

Harbour Bridge

This is a no-brainer. There are two shots you have to get in Sydney and this is one. There are two main spots to grab the classic ‘I’m in Sydney, here’s the bridge’ shot. For the up close version, head to The Rocks and then down to the waters edge and grab an up close and personal shot that acts like a tripwire for your adorning followers. The other go-to shot of the ‘old clothes hanger’ can be taken from Opera Bar, located under the Sydney Opera House. It’s a solid landscape shot that holds something quintessentially Sydney about it. These snaps, with a little light editing, will go off like the bridge does on New Year’s.

Opera House

It’s good to get the big two out of the way first, and as you’ve probably guessed this is the second shot all visitors must take. While you are snapping the bridge at the Opera Bar, sipping on a little afternoon refresher, swing around in your seat and marvel at the 63m tall, white tiled beauty that is the Sydney Opera House. Once you have picked your jaw up off the ground, nab a little shot of this beauty. Either from ground level near the steps or even better is on the water. Jump on the Sydney to Manly Ferry from Circular Quay for around $7 and smack the #ImOnABoat all over that glorious post.

Botanical Gardens

The Royal Botanic Gardens are massive and absolutely breath-taking. They’re actually the oldest scientific institution in Oz and maybe the most important historic botanical institutions in the world. Get amongst the greenery and combine a city, harbour or sunset backdrop to your garden shot – experiment!

Queen Victoria Building

Next to Town Hall on George Street, you’ll find an 118 year old, Romanesque Revival style building that is home to many boutique stores and more importantly houses the only Andriano Zumbo store in the CBD. These particulars are the exact reason why this makes the QVB a must for your online photog production. Whether you want to focus on the stunning architecture inside or out, snap a little #fashioninspo in the Camilla store or just to grab that perfect #needcoffee shot at any one of the cafes that line the ground floor of the QVB, you’ll be in a good place to stumble over a pot of likes.

Hyde Park

Take a walk into Sydney’s favourite park and you are swamped with some incredible opportunities for some unyielding intsa content. Check out the Northern end near St James Station, you’ll find a group of old men with the sole intention to take each other out over a friendly game of novelty sized chess, monochrome it and hit post ASAP. If that doesn’t get your own like, head up to Archibald Fountain and get a shot of St Marys Cathedral in the background, this snap will work best just after sunrise or as the sunset is doing its colour thing #goldenhour.

Chinatown

Head down to Dixon Street around dusk on any given Friday and you’ll find yourself in the midst of a very busy Hawker style market. A classic Chinatown feel, with superb food options, a little haggling here and there and a hidden master piece that goes off on the ‘gram scene. Tucked one street back from the hustle and bustle of Friday night Chinatown, you’ll find Kimbler Lane, a fixed installation by artist Jason Wing In between Two Worlds, will have the like button being hammered. You have to check this out for yourself, but the short of it all is an array of spirit figures, all lit up that create a different world feel for an out-of-this-world lane way Instagram. Once you have snapped all this up, head to Emperors Cream Puffs, again hidden, at the end of Dixon, a tiny window where for 30 cents you can enjoy the goodness of a golden cream cloud like magic food puff thing. Amazing.

The Baxter Inn

We couldn’t leave this one out, Baxter’s Inn has to be one of the most instagrammed bars in all of Sydney. Maybe it’s the wall of Whiskey that requires a ladder to access the good stuff. Maybe it’s the talented bar team with all the quick witty banter in the world or it could be because it’s past your bed time and you find yourself in the basement of a building with a whole gang of new friends. Whatever it is, this place + your edit = gram heaven.

Wherever you find yourself, regardless of your location, Sydney has some amazing shots to be taken, so get out there and go nuts.
