Secret Menu Items

Feb 3, 2016  ·  3 min read

By Niall Roeder.

There is the menu… then there’s the clandestino, underground, secret menu. Our chefs like to throw secret menu items into the mix every now and then, because it’s fun and they really do whatever they want. We literally have no control over them. They’ll invent something, tell a few people, they’ll tell a few more, rumours spread, the whispers grow and evolve to the point where we have people coming in ordering purple monkey dishwashers (any Simpsons fans out there?). But everyone now and then someone will slide in and ask about a secret menu item with a wry grin… and of course, we oblige.

Where is this going? Good bloody question. Well, here’s a heads-up about a couple of treats that are hiding on the “under the counter” menu and if you hurry, you might join the secret menu club. You won’t be the first to try them, but we’ll pretend you were. Ignorance is bliss. And so are secret menu items.

The Secret Fish Sandwich

Crisp thin battered sumac spiced dory with lime shredded iceberg lettuce, bang bang sauce and sweet pickled jalapeños.

We have a secret fish sandwich. It’s secret and kind of limited edition. The chefs only make four each day and once those four are gobbled up, they don’t return until the next day. If you’re in there with your crew make sure you order first.

Prickly Pear and Yoghurt Gelato

Persian pistachio “fairy floss”, chia seeds, almond and caramel smashed praline, purple baby chard… and all the colours are super natural.

Just read that description will you. It’s extravagant, arousing and a little bit smug – the three characteristics all world class chefs look for in a dessert. We’ve said it many times before, but we’ll say it again, treat yo’self.

Bacon and Egg Roll

Made with love; Eggs over easy for the optimum runny egg, non greasy bacon, served on a fresh buttery Brioche roll with a choice of tomato or bbq sauce.

Now, this B&E isn’t a newbie. It is however a cult classic secret menu item. It’s been mentioned in both The Urban List’s top 9 of Sydney’s Best Bacon and Egg Rolls and TimeOut’s Sydney Best Bacon and Egg Rolls… so it must be doing something right. Question is, when is Sydney’s bacon and egg roll reviewers, Flavour Quest, going to review it?!
