The Sydney Burger Scene

Sydney, Australia. We love a burger. And due to this love AND in homage to our favourite scene in Pulp Fiction where Samuel L Jackson proclaims “Mmm-mmmm, that is a tasty burger”, we decided to give you a guide to the tastiest burgers out there. We love burgers so much that trying to actually crown a winner was too hard, so we just came up with a list of the best burgers created in our fair and hungry city. Just a heads up before you read this, burger cravings are imminent…

Burger Project

Tucked above the World Square food offerings, take a left at the top of the stairs and you’ll find the ridiculously well constructed burgers from Rockpool entrepreneur Neil Perry. Next week sees the second store open in the MLC centre, less of a walk for the CBD folk. With the old school diner trays and a bright airy space, it’s a step away from the current Sydney burger scene. With a focus on Cape Grim grass fed beef, the burgers patties are made fresh in store; you can taste the love and freshness in these ones.

Gowings Bar

Take the elevator to level 1, stroll across the lobby of QT Sydney and take the stairs up to Gowings Bar & Grill. Take a seat at the bar, have a chat with the bartenders, they’ll sort you out with a drink that is to your taste and then order the Gowings Burger. This thing is delicious. Sonoma bun and a perfectly seasoned patty, the tilsit cheese tops it off nicely.

Mary’s

Our first love. From the moment we ordered the cheeseburger, almost two years ago, it was love at first bite. But seriously, from the graffiti laden Newtown venue to the CBD takeaway joint, the team at Mary’s know how to prep a damn fine burger. Also when you’re next in their Newtown space, look over the wine list, it’s seriously brilliant and have some real surprises hidden in there.

Cheeky Burger

Cheeky has that feel of a classic American burger joint. Sit out the back for a super relaxed dinner vibe. The burgers here are classics. Chow into the Cheeky Double Cheese and grab a bowl of the chilli fries – so good! Burgers aren’t the only reason Cheeky is good for it, the wings here are next level and worth holding out for Wednesday’s $1 wings and $5 Resch’s night.

Chur Burger

Pulled pork and that Chur BBQ sauce – team that with some sweet potato fries and you have the baddest kiwi burger feast in your hands. To complete your orders why not throw a Milo milkshake onto the order for good measure. Chur have also opened up their Express store on O’Connell Street in the CBD. The Surry Hills store comes with a line at lunchtime during the week, but you know it is worth the wait.

Jacks Newtown

Jacks is newest on the list. But they ran out of food after opening and had to close for the day. This wasn’t due to under ordering, it was due to the fact that these bad boys have a burger that is similar to the American ‘Shake Shack’ style. Along with the choice of soda, they have frozen custard shake on offer that is next to mind blowing. The menu plays home to a Cheeseburger, Bacon Cheeseburger, Vegetarian Burger and Crinkle Cut Fries. The perfect level of seasoning is what makes Jacks a sure win for us.
